This model is based on the “hemp leaf pattern” costume of the Kabuki play“Yagura no Oshichi. Oshichi was the daughter of a grocer in Hongo, Edo, who is said to have been executed for arson in the early Edo period. It is said that she actually existed in the early Edo period (1603-1867). Her passionate and sorrowful life, in which she devoted her life to love, was featured in Ihara Saikaku's “Koshoku Gonin Onna” (Five Women of Color), and became widely known to the public.
The elegance of the kimono worn by Oshichi in the Kabuki play is indicative of her upbringing and purity. The hemp leaf pattern on the fabric is a symbol of her strong inner vitality and endless passion.
