The uniqueness of UZ Fabric lies in the textile itself. We want to create a modern look through the selection of patterns and their combinations.


■You have also released basic items such as pouches and bags as new items. I feel that creating items with basic shapes makes it more difficult to maintain the brand image.

"I think it all comes down to the selection and combination of patterns. As a process, it's where we spend the most time. Anyway, the most important thing is sourcing the goods. How many 'fateful encounters' can you find there? And also pattern matching. We completely ignore the so-called common sense of kimono and Japanese rules. We really just combine patterns intuitively, so that when you look at them, you can feel that they are interesting. I think that's where the originality of the brand comes from."


■On the other hand, are there any items that you would never choose when purchasing?

"I'm 'Koume-chan' (laughs). I almost never choose floral or classic Japanese patterns - pine, maple leaves, plum blossoms, etc. Even if I do choose them, I don't use them until I've cut them into small pieces. That's why I choose things that are as modern as possible, with a geometric look. Or, I think I only choose things that are really large and flashy."


■It's true that many of Uz Fabric 's items have patterns or a sense of rhythm.

"The pattern is the key to a dress, so I choose something that really catches your eye, but I don't wear things that you'd typically wear to a tea ceremony, or things that are clearly designated for weddings, funerals, or the seasons. I don't choose things that generally look like 'Japanese patterns.'"


■I see. In other words, the definition of what is generally called "Japanese patterns" today is very narrow.

"I think so. There are actually a lot more. They may not look like Japanese patterns, but they were created in Japan. But now it has become a very stereotype. It's like a Japanese pattern is a pattern that people overseas would like. But that's only a small part of it. There are a surprising variety of textile designs."
